Far Caves

Far Caves

The Far, or Theodosius, Caves are associated with the Venerable Theodosius of the Caves, one of the founders of the monastery and creators of its monastic tradition. The total length of the known underground passages is about 460 meters.

Here the oldest underground churches of the Lavra have been preserved — the Church of the Annunciation, founded around 1058, and the 11th-century Church of the Nativity of Christ, as well as the cell of the Venerable Theodosius. A separate part of the complex is the Varangian Caves — more than 100 meters of corridors that have remained almost untouched, preserving their original appearance, sandy floor, and ancient graffiti.

The Far Caves hold the relics of 51 cave saints. For ten centuries, this space has remained a place of prayer, pilgrimage, and the continuation of the spiritual tradition of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.
