The Dormition Cathedral is the main church of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and one of the most important sacred structures of the princely era. It became the first stone church of the Pechersk Monastery and for centuries defined the spiritual and architectural face of the Lavra.
The cathedral was founded in 1073 with the participation of Saint Theodosius and the Pechersk brethren. Prince Sviatoslav not only donated the land and funds for construction but, according to tradition, also personally dug the trench for the foundations of the future church. The Great Church was consecrated in 1089 in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos.
The Dormition Cathedral became an architectural model for many churches of Kyivan Rus’. Churches in Rostov, Suzdal, and other cities were built following its example. This is another reminder that Kyiv was the center that set the direction for the development of sacred architecture. Unfortunately, most of these monuments are today located on the territory of modern-day russia.
The beginning of the Lavra’s great artistic tradition is also connected with the cathedral. Its interior was adorned with mosaics and frescoes created by Greek masters. Among their students was the young monk Alipy — the first known Ukrainian icon painter, who was later included among the venerated Fathers of the Caves.
Over the centuries, the Dormition Cathedral served as an honorable resting place for princes, church figures, and patrons. Petro Mohyla, Yelysei Pletenetskyi, Pamvo Berynda, Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi, and other figures who influenced the development of Ukrainian spirituality, education, and culture were buried here.
Throughout its history, the cathedral repeatedly suffered destruction, fires, and reconstructions. After the Batu Khan invasion, it was restored by Prince Semen Olelkovych, and in the 18th century the church took on the Baroque appearance that became an inseparable part of the Lavra’s image.
The cathedral’s greatest loss occurred on November 3, 1941, when it was blown up during the Nazi occupation of Kyiv. The Dormition Cathedral was rebuilt in independent Ukraine in 1999–2000. The Great Church was consecrated on August 24, 2000 — thus the Lavra’s main church returned to the historic skyline of Kyiv.
However, the trials for the cathedral were not over. On the night of June 15, 2026, during a massive Russian attack on Kyiv, a Russian Shahed drone struck the St. Stephen’s side chapel of the Dormition Cathedral. The fire destroyed more than 80% of the church’s roof, but rescuers managed to prevent the fire from spreading inside and saved Ukraine’s largest iconostasis, 25 meters tall. Within just a few days, the cathedral was covered with emergency protective covering, beginning a new stage of its restoration.
How to visit the Dormition Cathedral
The Dormition Cathedral is temporarily closed to visitors due to restoration work following the Russian attack of June 15, 2026. The church can only be viewed from the outside.
