Delegation of the US Congressional Helsinki Commission visited the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

A delegation from the US Congressional Helsinki Commission and the US Embassy in Ukraine visited the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra National Reserve.

It included Senior Advisor, Representative of the Helsinki Commission at the US Mission to the OSCE Janice Helwig, Senior Policy Advisor Nate Sibley, Policy Advisor Connor Lewis, Diplomat of the US Embassy in Ukraine Owen Jones, and Embassy employee Svyatoslav Kustovinov.

The General Director of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve, Maksym Ostapenko, showed the delegation members the Assumption Cathedral and spoke about the consequences of the Russian attack that occurred on the night of June 15.

Representatives of the Helsinki Commission and the US Embassy visited the site of the Russian strike drone strike and learned about the destruction suffered by the temple.

The delegation members also visited a street exhibition dedicated to the history of the destruction and revival of the Assumption Cathedral, and completed their acquaintance with the Lavra in the Refectory Church.

Such visits give international partners the opportunity to see firsthand the consequences of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cultural heritage and draw attention to the need for its preservation and restoration.
