The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra National Reserve has completed the emergency covering of the Assumption Cathedral and is preparing for the next stage of restoration after the Russian attack that occurred on the night of June 15. Then, 19 objects were damaged by enemy drone strikes, in particular, a fire destroyed more than 80% of the roof of the Assumption Cathedral.
After the fire was extinguished, it was necessary to protect the cathedral from rain and further destruction. For this purpose, rescuers from the State Emergency Service began emergency covering of the damaged sections of the roof. The reserve received materials for this in the form of charitable assistance.
The installation of the emergency roof has already been completed. On June 23, rescuers closed the last section of the roof. Heat guns continue to operate in the temple to dehumidify the premises.
The covering will protect the Assumption Cathedral from precipitation for the next two to three months. The reserve plans to use this time to prepare for the next stage – installing a conservation coating that will allow the monument to safely survive the autumn-winter period.
In parallel, the preparation of documentation for future conservation works is underway. To assess the condition of the damaged cathedral, architects and a designer from the Lviv Polytechnic National University were invited to the reserve. Together with the reserve specialists, they inspected the Assumption Cathedral and determined the scope of work required to install a conservation coating.
Specialists are currently finalizing the defect act and estimate documentation. After signing these documents, the National Reserve will be able to apply to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine for the allocation of funds from the state budget reserve fund for the installation of a conservation coating.
