Representatives of UNESCO and the Government of Japan visited the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

UNESCO and the Government of Japan continue to support the preservation of Ukrainian shrines. State Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan Kenji Yamada, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Ayano Kunimitsu, Deputy Minister of Culture of Ukraine Tetyana Filevska and UNESCO representatives visited the National Reserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” during their official visit to Ukraine.

The delegation visited the Assumption Cathedral, which was damaged by the Russian attack on June 15, and learned about the first stage of emergency restoration work. The Director General of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve, Maksym Ostapenko, spoke about the consequences of the enemy drone strike and the measures being taken to preserve the damaged monuments. The guests viewed a tablet exhibition dedicated to the history of the destruction and restoration of the Assumption Cathedral.

Special attention during the meeting was paid to joint projects of UNESCO and Japan, which are already being implemented at world heritage sites in Kyiv. In particular, a monitoring system was recently installed at the Church of All Saints in the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, which allows recording vibrations and monitoring the condition of the historical building.

UNESCO is helping to prepare for the upcoming restoration of the Church of All Saints. This work is part of a long-term program to preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage damaged by the war.
